Madesimo is the Italian municipality farthest from the sea, it’s placed in the middle of the Alps, between Lepontine and Rhaetian Alps. It touches Switzerland towards North-West, and it connects the Swiss Hinterrhein (Posterior Rhine) valley through the Splügen Pass.
It has a population of 580 inhabitants and an area 86 sq km, it’s 150 km far from Milan and 80 Km from Sondrio, altitude between 1,100 and 3,275 m a.s.l. (Madesimo village is at 1,534 m a.s.l.).
The place is famous for practising winter sports; in the past it was renowned for its healing thermal waters and for this reason the poet Giosuè Carducci stayed there for several seasons.
